The Italian Armani name is widely associated with sophisticated, fashionable clothing design for men and women with many outlets throughout the world. Armani brand names include Giorgio Armani, Emporio Armani (established 1981), Armani Jeans (1981), Borgonuovo 21, Armani Golf (established 1966), and Armani Neve (winter sportswear, established 1996). Armani's largest export market is the United States, spearheaded by two major stores on Madison Avenue, New York. Armani's career began in 1957, working for the leading Italian department store La Rinascente before joining Nino Ceruti as a fashion designer from 1964 to 1970. He then worked as a freelance designer, establishing his menswear label in 1974 and women's wear in 1975. His smart, yet casual, designs were far looser than the more tailored look of much contemporary clothing, Armani women's wear in particular being characterized by its unstructured jackets and suits and the use of high-quality fabrics. The first Armani perfume was launched in 1982, Armani glasses in 1987, Armani shoes in 1987, with a range of home accessories being sold through Emporio Armani. Armani has received several design awards including the Neiman Marcus Award (1979) and the Council of Fashion Designers of America (1983).
